A COMMUNITY’S LENS – PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

Fifty individuals, from as young as age seven to our more seasoned residents, have their
best photos on display at the Nuveen Community Center for the Arts’ second annual
Community Photography show.  The photos represent diverse subject areas from Lake
Michigan landscapes to impressive shots of animals and florals, comical and cute
portraits, and impressive architecture and art.  These images will be on display July 6-
29 at the exhibit A Community’s Lens – Photography Exhibition.

At an opening reception Tuesday, July 6 from 5-7 p.m., Nuveen will award three $50
first place prizes to the top entrant in each category, as designated by juror and
professional photographer Elizabeth Reynders of the White River Gallery.  Awards will
be presented at 6 p.m.  Refreshments will be provided, courtesy of Fretty’s Catering.  All
community members are invited to come in and vote for their favorite photo to win the
People’s Choice award, which carries a prize of $50.

This show will not only promote the creative spirits of area photographers, but will
provide an opportunity for the public to purchase favorably priced original art to add to
their collections.  All photographs are matted and available for purchase for only $15.

The exhibit will be on display from July 6-29.  Display hours are 12-5 p.m. Tuesday –
Friday, and 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday.

Pure Color - a Pastel Exhibit

The natural pigments in soft pastels and oil pastels will light up the exhibit space
during the Nuveen Community Center for the Arts August exhibit “Pure Color – A
Pastel Exhibit.”  Four artists – Carol Cousineau of Spring Lake, Vianna Szabo of
Romeo, MI, Howard Garet of Grand Haven, and Carol Brauer-Schmidt of Grand
Haven, will display their pastel works at the center August 6-26.  The exhibit opens
with a reception and chance to meet the artists on August 6 from 5-7 p.m.

Each artist brings a different dimension to the exhibit.  Carol Cousineau works
primarily in oil pastels, garnering inspiration from West Michigan scenes.  Her love of
color and use of shapes and patterns to create strong composition create bold images
sure to impress.  Vianna Szabo (
http://VIANNASZABO.COM) is an award winning
portrait artist who also loves to do Plein Air painting – her daughter’s visits to Blue
Lake Fine Arts Camp caused her to stumble across the White Lake area, which has
been the subject of many of her outdoor works.  She is also an instructor at the
Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center in Birmingham, Michigan.  Carol Brauer-Schmidt’
s artwork depicts exaggerated and simplified scenes, infused with the rich color of oil
pastel, and often an element of “fun.” Howard Garet works primarily in soft pastels,
creating landscapes, that leave the viewer with a sense of beauty and serenity.

Nuveen is offering three pastel classes to complement the exhibit.  Sharon Smithem
will be teaching a youth (ages 7+) chalk pastel workshop August 9-12 form 10-11:30 a.
m.  The cost is $10.  Adults are welcome to join the Pure Color workshop with Vianna
Szabo on Saturday, August 7 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Szabo will cover identifying,
mixing, and controlling color to create art filled with light and harmony.  The
workshop applies to all mediums, and is $95.  Finally, Howard Garet will teach a
workshop titled “Painting Landscapes in Pastel” on Tuesdays, August 17-31 from 6-9
p.m.  The workshop is open to artists of all levels, and will focus on how to start your
artwork, capture light, and convey the natural colors found in landscapes.  Howard’s
workshop is $70.
