The Nuveen Community Center for the Arts has teamed up with two local artists, Missy
Morrow and Cara O’Brien, as well as LaFontsee Galleries of Grand Rapids, to create
artwork to adorn the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. The project, Children’s Art for
Children, aims to decorate all 13 floors of the new hospital with artwork created by
children.
On Saturday, July 17 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., youth are invited to the Nuveen Center for
a craft’s open house in which they can create artwork both for themselves, and for the
Children’s Hospital. Participants will have the chance to use their own handmade
stamp to design clay tiles, which will end up in a large mural designed by Cara O’
Brien. They can also help work on a collage of the Montague/Whitehall area, create
silly doctors and nurses using animal faces from magazines, and experience
printmaking, along with other projects led my Missy Morrow. Nuveen will provide
refreshments to thank participants for their efforts. The crafts open house is free and
open to all area youth.
Projects for the hospital also happen every Tuesday at the Arts Council of White Lake’s
summer concert series, 7 p.m. at the Montague Bandshell.
